I touch this little miracle in my hands with loads of love & care as if it is my just born baby. People often get puzzled when they see me like this. Not many know that there is a reason behind my behaviour.
Till the age of 32, I did not realize that I had a hearing defect. None of the few "family friends" ENT surgeons told me that I had a hearing deficiency. But, when I went to check through Audiometry, I realised that I had hearing loss of up to 60% on the right side and 55% on the left side. My husband was visibly shocked. My parents too were. After I started using my hearing aid, my world has become very colourful. It is not the eye alone that sees the beauty of life; it is the ear also that makes a person "see" the beauty of life.
My husband said, "You have been a fighter all along. With this problem and with a family of 2 kids, you have gone ahead with your higher education and challenging career; being dissatisfied with your life, you continued to search for your path and now here you are - with a totally new life"
In a way my husband was right. After my wedding, I started my professional degree of BL, then ML and tried my hand as a Resource person for The Hindu - publication. I was offering Soft Skill Training programs. I was doing all this while being impaired by my poor hearing. However, at one point, it became worse and I started withdrawing into myself and avoided socialising. When the last benchers asked me any doubts, I would not be able to hear and it would be very embarrassing. I stopped venturing into social gatherings.
All this changed when I got my hearing aid. After this little instrument came into my life, I took a lot of interest in learning about the instrument. A Siemens dealer suggested that I start my own Hearing Aid Centre with Siemen's help. Initially I refused. Then I thought ‘Why not try?’ I started rigorous training on Audiometry, underwent Orientation program about the instrument etc. I was ready to get into this "Adventure"called Healthcare Business.
I knew it was dangerous. I knew it was not easy. (My husband being in the Diagnostic space, I understood the hardships in the Healthcare domain) However, I felt this was my "calling". I needed to make a difference - very badly- now that I had discovered a completely new world of hearing.
I kick-started with a condition that there should be "no targets" from Siemens but they did not mind... maybe they had seen the conviction in my eyes. I started and ran my centre successfully for 1 year. I gave my full attention to the centre. Though initially my husband refused to support me financially, he could see my dedication. I was working not just 9am-5 pm, but nearly 18 hours a day - all with a smile. That’s when I realised that this is where I belong and this is what I was born to do. My husband invested after 1 year in an exclusive showroom.
I derive my motivation from my patients whose lives I touch and make a difference in. It is an unparalleled moment of joy to see them discover their remarkable quality of hearing and the dawn of confidence in their faces. Several women cried in my counselling room. I have not hired anybody to counsel my customers...because no one can understand the problems the way I can understand them.
Yes. The journey has been tough. It is certainly like mountain climbing. Very rough terrain, especially when I decided to move away from "referral fee structure". But, I’m enjoying every minute. I am making good profits. I have identified my "purpose of life"
